Tributes:
|
The
tributes shown below were entered in our original
Tribute Book, which simply became too big for the
page to load. These tributes were posted from the
launch of the original site in March 2000 until its
current incarnation to celebrate the 5th Anniversary
of Ollie's death in 2004.
Some
of these tributes are from fellow drinkers, who may
well have been under the influence of the demon drink
when writing them (as the spelling and comments might
testify). Some are from old friends and fellow actors/writers/directors
and drinking companions. Some people have signed the
book more than once. For the sake of authenticity,
none of these entries has been edited in any way,
and none have been removed.
We hope
that you enjoy reading through the tributes.
Those
wishing to sign the new tribute book should click

We have
also been contacted by people who met Ollie along
the way, and they have kindly reflected on their times
in our Memories Section.

I will always remember Oliver Reed as Athos from Richard
Letser's Musketeer movies. He was a great actor from the
British Cinema and one hell of a party animal when it came
to drinking. I can remember last year when I learned that
he had died. Me and one of my college friends went out Friday
night to chase women and have a few drinks. I toasted to
Oliver's memory by drinking five glasses of Cabernet Sauvreigon.
After that, I was intoxicated. Nevertheless, it was worth
the hangover. Oliver, we all love you and we will miss you.
You were the hippest and the hottest when it came to movies
and raising hell. Have fun in the afterlife and have a few
on us.

I raise a glass of fine port to The great Gladiator. Oli
is a legend and to me a hero. He could take any one on in
the drinking stakes and still get up in time for filming.
Oli is one of the great men of all time and deserves his
place in the history books.

I had forgotten that Oliver had died last year, but was
sadly reminded while reading a web site devoted to Gladiator.
I have always admired Oliver and was strangely attracted
to him, even though my mother thought I was nuts saying
"He has such a brutishnes about him" I'll never
forget him and "Women in Love". Gladiator opens
in a view days and I will go on opening day and have a whiskey
that day in his honor. What a lovely place to buried in
Churchtown, Ireland. I lived in Ireland for several years
and can think of few place where I would rather be buried.
I used to have a picture of just Oliver's eyes on my dorm
door years ago, and I wrote the caption "The eyes of
Ollie are upon you" ...I guess they really are now.
Slainte mate!

Ollie's up there now with Keith Moon and the others enjoying
a spiritual pint. I'm sure George Best's on the way! One
day we'll meet him. Let's declare the day of his death 'National
Ollie Reed Day' and get leathered annually in his honour.

My 2nd son has the middle name of Athos in honor of Ollie.
He will always be remembered by me as the dashing Athos.
I am so glad that there is a place to honor him on the net.
RIP to a fine actor and even better drinker.

I'll never forget Oilver in the 60's film 'The Shuttered
Room', with costars Gig Young and Carol Lynley; the perfect
sixties yuppies set against Reed's angst-filled island hillbilly.
And Reed screaming at the lighthouse, "Aunt Agather...
Aunt Agather...", it was all too fantastic. The odd
cool-hot pace and sexual tensions between he and Lynley
as cousins was just the best. Now the house IS yours, Oliver.
Joe Buz
Cheers to the man who taught me that a life of drunken daubauchery
is not a sin, but an art. A toast to a man who held his
own singing with the WHO and dared to go mano-a-mano with
Shelly Winters. God Bless You.

Just saw gladiator, and it was a fitting end to a glorious
career. I'll never forget the eyes, the voice, and the dominant
charm. My glass is high and full in tribute!

Have you SEEN Gladiator? Touching to see Ollie at probably
one of his best performances. Still as mighty, compelling
and impressive as ever. Quite chilling actually.

TRULY ONE OF THE LAST OF HIS KIND. WITHOUT QUESTION...AN
ICON AND ONE OF THE 'GREAT' CHARACTER ACTORS OF ALL TIME.
A MAN WHO DID NOT NEED TO RAISE HIS VOICE TO MAKE YOU LISTEN.
HIS WHISPERS WERE LOUDER THAN ANY CHORUS. WE ARE ALL DIMINISHED
BY HIS PASSING. I LIFT MY GLASS IN HONOR.

Myself and some fellow 'musketeers' from work are about
to indulge in our second 'Oliver Reed Tribute' drinking
session, the first one being after we all learned of the
great mans passing. That one set off at a furious pace and
lasted 2 hours. Enough said. Respect.

I thought he was the greatest since I saw him in a movie
back in the '60s. All the years I was raising my kids, they
knew that nothing would make Mom's day more than an Oliver
Reed movie playing on T.V.! Ollie died one day before my
46th birthday. I honestly felt as though I'd lost a dear
friend. How I wish I could have known the guy! He was the
icing on the cake.
Rachel
I did not find out that Oliver Reed was no longer with us
until the Oscars. I immediately called my family and we
reminisced about seeing "Curse of the Werewolf"
when I was about 7. I still have vivid memories of reminding
myself for weeks that "he's just an actor, it's just
acting" before I was no longer afraid that some hairy,
riveting, creature -- one that I was not certain I really
wanted to escape from -- would ambush me from a dark corner.
After "Women in Love" my friends would mention
Oliver Reed and we would all fan ourselves. Later, I couldn't
believe he pulled off singing in "Tommy". And
today, my husband and I saw "Gladiator" and we
both think Reed was the best thing in it. Grizzled, craggy,
captivating and (to me) sexier than ever. Sometimes you
don't realize how much you are affected by another person's
life work. To Reed, family, and friends -- I raise a glass
high!
Sharon Daigle
How can you ever forget those EYES? He made Russell Crowe
fade into the background in his scenes, even at his age.

Hi i'd just like to say thankyou for putting an Ollie site
together. This really is a great site,i was just wondering
wasn't Ollie born in 1938 not 1939.Iwas very upset when
there was no mention of his death on the news. He was a
truly brillant actor the best of his generation. R.I.P ROBERT

It's so nice to see tributes like this onefor all
those years I thought I was the only one whose knees turned
to mousse everytime Oliver was onscreen! I saw him in "Oliver"
when I was about eight or nine. I remember thinking I should
be scared, but instead I was just in awe. It was like, "Man!
I don't know what 'it' is yet, but whatever it is, he's
got it! I've had a raging crush on him ever since. I'm glad
his last role was so wonderfuleven if I did sob half
the way home from the theater, "I just can't believe
he's gone!" I'm a teetotaller, but hopefully Ollie
doesn't mind if I raise a glass of ginger ale in his honor.
:-)

I'm going to the cinema at 8:00pm to watch the gorgeous
Ollie in action in gladiator. Am i the only 19 year old
to fancy Ollie? I first really took notice of him in the
film Tommy.Even at the age of 61 he managed to make heart
beat faster.

Adieu, Oliver! You set the example for all to follow: Since,
in the end, we're all dead men, why not face death with
friends, a smile, eight lagers, twelve double-rums and a
bottle of whiskey?
Mr. Paul
Cheers Ollie! Me and my four mates toast you regularly when
we get together and take a stand against this political
age. We are part of a growing number and you are our Patron
Saint. Thank-you. Dont be upset people. Its now time to
celebrate this great life....something too large for the
dickhead press to understand. Ollie was an individual in
a world of liars, thats how I see it anyway. Up yours if
you dont. Cheers.

them sound sexy.

I made my mom take me to see the Three Musketeers (twice)
when I was 13. I've been infatuated since then and never
miss a chance to see one of his movies. I raise a glass
to you Oli, you are loved and remembered!

Everyone remembers Oliver Reed as a 'Hell Raiser'and a 'Party
Animal'. But I salute Oliver Reed for being the 'TRUE ENGLISH
GENTLEMAN' (as there are not many of the the 'OLD BOYS'left)
and the Oliver Reed that enjoyed his private live away from
the peeping eyes of the public. God bless you Ollie, you
are another of the old breed gone.

Hello all I've really enjoyed looking through this website,
as well as "reeding" some of the comments from
the many fans of Oliver Reed. I too was a big fan of "Oli"
- as he seems to be known affectionately in British circles.
Seeing that you all have an interest in him, you may want
to visit my website for a unique song recorded by Oliver,
many years before he died. We have obtained the rights to
use an actual recorded song done by Mr Reed. The song is
available as a downloadable MP3 from our website (http://www.entercor.com).
I'm sure many people who visit this site will be surprised
to hear how rich and clear Oli's voice is in the recording.
Please visit the site and let me know what you think the
song. Thanks, Rowan

Well - Ollie was a hell of a man. Talented, lovable, and
a genuine character - his own man, at all times. I'll be
in Malta in a few days, and I'll stop by The Pub to have
a drink in Ollie's name. I, and many others, had many happy
times in The Horseshoe Bar in Glasgow, his regular pub any
time he was in the city. He's a sad loss, and the movie
world is that little bit dimmer without him.
Evan Funn

Was in Malta in July and spent most of my 2 weeks in The
Pub in Valleta...just to savour the atmosphere. The barman
was most hospitable and I was glad to see you came up with
a site to pay tribute to one of Britains finest actors !!.The
world was a much richer place for having him and a poorer
one without. Interested to see your spooky photo as I think
something strange happened in the Pub when I was there..listen
to this We..my wife and 2 sons found the Pub after some
searching in the city..we sat down without realising which
part of the bar Ollie used on a regular basis After looking
at the photos etc we worked out that my youngest son had
been sitting in the famous corner seat for some 15 mins...I
asked to change with him and have some photos taken in the
seat.As soon as I took the seat a photo FELL from the wall...some
people in the bar at that time expressed suprise and were
visably shocked...when we tried taking photos our camera
stopped working after only a couple of shots !!...we put
a brand new film in and this one automatically rewound after
only 1 or 2 photos !!!...spooky or what ??...keep the site
up as long as poss...good work mate...cheers

I'm fortunate enough to have friends who live in Malta and
I've just returned from there where i visited 'the pub'
and had a beer with Ollie. I was going to buy a t-shirt
but was put off by the 'landlady' sitting in the picture
! Is there any chance of getting a t-shirt with just Ollie
on it? Does anyone know of any of his films that you can
buy on video, except 'Oliver'?

I was once told by a director that he couldnt cast
me because I wasnt the right type. I asked
him what type he was looking for and what type was I? He
replied that he wanted a leading man type, more of a Tom
Cruise and that I was more of a Oliver Reed type. That was
and is the greatest compliment that I have ever received
as an actor. I miss you Mister Reed. You were , are , and
always will be my favorite actor. William Aitken

Oliver...you had such ardent passion for life and love.Men
like you are few and far between and very sadly a great
many of them are no longer with us either. May I reserve
my seat between you and Keith when my time comes - Sharing
a drink with you both is something I will look forward to.
You died happy in love, acting and with a drink in your hand.If
it was to be that you could stay with us no longer , you
could not have chosen a more suitable exit. Bless you big
man. - Lisa -

Oliver was and still is a great hero to many people including
myself. He went out from nothing and turned himself into
one of the greatest actors of his generation. Some say he
didn't make the most of his talent but he chose a life that
he loved most, illogical in many peoples eyes but a life
that Ollie loved. He didn't place any importance upon who
you were, if you were a nice person, enjoyed a drink then
you were alright by him. The world is a less richer place
without Ollie in it but he has left a legacy that many people
in life should take on board and that is do what is most
comfortable.

At tonight's Academy Awards (3/25/01) both funny and touching
tributes to Oliver were voiced twice, once by one of the

be Oliver's first cousin once removed)

To Oliver, I salute you. I portray the Comte de la Fere

Athos. I have tried to model my portrayal after you. You
have been a great insperation to me both as an actor, but
also in my personal life. I could always count on you to
help me get strength through the hard times in my life.
I would like to dedicate my performance in your honor. God

What can I say,What a man!. For Xmas I was given a wonderful

The day he died, i cried. No rhetoric about him, his name
says it all about him, Ollie. I am pleased that he hasn't
been honoured by third string non-entities who never had
a decent word to say about him when alive. For those who
loved and respected him, we honour his memory always, tribute
enough. On a personal note, "Thank-you Ollie."

I first saw Ollie in the film Curse of the Weirwolf when
I was a teenager and have followed his career ever since.
My first job was in Wimbledon and at lunchtimes we used
to go to a pub on the common and that was the first time
I saw Ollie with his first wife and family, as he used to
live locally. The second was again in Wimbledon but this
time I was at a cinema about to watch I'll never forget
whatsis name. Before the film began the curtains opened
and in the middle of the stage was a table. Ollie then walked
on with an axe over his shoulder and proceeded to smash
up the table after which he told a few jokes and walked
off. The film began with Ollie walking into an office with
an axe and smashing up Orson Welles desk.!! I'll miss you
as you were a great actor and had a great sense of Humour.

What can I say that so many have already said? I love and
have loved Oliver for years, starting with the movie "Paranoiac"
when I was 6 yrs old. Then I saw several other movies and
I was hooked. What a hunk a burnin love he was! He had the
sexiest look and his voice was awesome. I am having a beer
now in his honor! Hey, at least we have his memory through
movies and photos. Here's to the best actor that ever lived,

Thanks for the opportunity to post a message in tribute
to an actor and person I have admiration for. My first recollections
of Mr. Reed came from his performance in the 3 Musketeer
movies from the 1970s, since then I have seen much of his
earlier work, and later performances as they were made.
His screen presence is undeniable and his personality showed
through every part he had. From good character to bad character,
his performance never wavered nor did the qualities in himself
which made him so respected, liked and admired, they were
always there. I will miss Mr. Oliver Reed, and if I may
say this in a loveable, tongue-in-cheek way and make a statement
I think he would like himself: "He was a charming,
loveable rogue with a heart of gold who lived life on his
terms". Mr. Oliver Reed, you will be missed and always
respected. Sincerely, Duane Neja

Sadly missed. One of the great British actors of all time.
Richard Northwood
As a child, the first late film I was allowed to watch was
'The Curse of the Werewolf' He was the only actor who seemed
to believe in this high-camp horror film. It's a great credit
to his professionalism that he brought great passion and
belief to roles which lesser actors would try to rise above.
A superb man who definately lived his life. I wish we could
all be that brave.

Oliver Reed is a god. I love the bloke and try and model
myself on him. I've only seen him in a handful of films,
but to me the real genius of this man was his ladism. Me

been proud! Rest my friend...hopefully in Heavens bar!

Nobody can or will ever follow your performance. Thank you

What a Master of Presence. He carried himself in such a
way that others respected him, but yet he did not demand
it. A master of lines, that no one else could carry off
quite so well and keep a straight face doing it. I can see
you in Summerland Oliver, white beard and hair and in your
white tunic glass still raised high in the tribute to life
and life again. I raise my glass high this year on the third
anniversary of your death. Hail great gladiator, We who
have yet to die salute you!!!!!!

I am only 18 and have recently read 'Evil Spirits'. Since
then I have studied Ollies films, realising that he is the
greatest actor that ever lived. Thankyou Ollie for being
the biggest influence in my life and making me realise that
having fun is the only thing that matters.
Oliver Reed
It's been 3 years since Ollie passed away and still there
is no one that could step into his shoes. Ken Russell once
said that he couldn't think of a single person with as much
aura and magnetism as Oliver Reed - and the same is still
true today. A great character sorely missed.

exist! God bless.

How in the hell did I manage to miss out on you all those
years? Where was I?!! But, I'm catching up now, buying your
film videos and finding out, so late, what a great talent
you were...ONE OF A KIND! 'No question you were gorgeous
and uniquely colorful. I just wish I hadn't found out so
late--and I wish you were still around, dear man.

My favorite movie I saw Oliver Reed was Oliver! It is one
of my favorite movies of all time. I also have the soundtrack
of it and one of my favorite is song is Consider Yourself.
I was really sad when I learned he passed away over 2 years
ago. When I listen to the Oliver! soundtrack, It always
help me remember him. Oliver, you have done a good job on
that movie I loved watching. Especially recieving 6 academy
awards including Best Picture, you have made your uncle
proud to be on that set. May God bless you Oliver, miss
you!

A talent, an icon and one of the last in the line of great
actor/hellraisers in the category of Richard Burton et al.
My friends and I toast your memory every time we get together
and drink, and a glass is raised whenver we watch one of
his films. One of the best actors ever to come out of the
UK. You are missed but the memory lives on. Here's to you,
cheers!
Andrew Taylor
To he who lived life as it should be lived, who gave so
much to so many, and great cheer and happiness worldwide,
to you Oliver Reed in your memory I raise a glass, Slainte!
Oliver Reed
To a man, an Icon, who knew how to live life to the full
and not a give a damn about the consequences. We're only
here for a short time, so let's enjoy ourselves, shall we?.
After all, "Life is for living", isn't it? Imitated,
but never equalled. Admired, but never acknowledged. Gone,
but never forgotten.

Anyone else remember Oliver Reed on that live late night
talk show where they had to take it off and put on a black
and white film about coal mining half way through? That
was the funniest thing on telly ever... classic Oliver Reed!

On what would have been his 66th birthday, I'll certainly
be raising a glass or two tonight. Still a much missed character

I unfortunately discovered the joy of watching this remarkable
man later in his life. I picked up The Three Musketeers
(1974) on a fluke one day - and fell head over heels with
a man more than 30 years my senior. There won't be another
quite like him, not in my lifetime I don't think. Cheers
to a great man, who's eyes and intensity I won't soon forget.
